"Everything was bleeding seriously and with no real feelings," he recalls. "The music radiated joy, but the classic environment, in which it took place was depressing."
Andre Rieu decided in 1987 to devote his career of Viennese music of the 19th century - and especially Johann Strauss, whose waltz had already impressed him as a little boy. Just like Strauss himself, who appeared rather in public parks as in the salons of high society, even Rieu stands at his concerts in the center of the stage, which is furnished with extravagant scenes and a huge ensemble of musicians and dancers.
Also as Strauss conducts also Rieu his orchestra with his violin bow and breaks the dusty rules of classical music by making jokes, telling stories and sometimes even sprinkling in a little slapstick comedy - while the audience clapping enthusiastically in the aisles, singing , humming and dancing.
