In 1995, the then 15 year old singer and guitarist Simon Neil, the Biffy Clyro predecessor band Screwfish founded together with drummer Ben Johnson in Scotland. The bass played at that time a certain Barry, who but a short time later to be replaced by the twin brother of Ben, James Johnston. By the end of January of the same year, the group played their first concert. Anno 1997 attracted the band members to Glasgow, where the three local schools visited.

With the single "Mountains" from the summer of 2008 the band was able to reach the top 10 of the UK singles chart and landed in eighth place for the first time. End of next year then the fifth studio album by Biffy Clyro was titled "Only Revolutions". The factory with a run time of 42:49 minutes was able to convince the most part and reached position three of the UK album charts critics. The band received for a platinum record on the island. In Germany, they landed only on the 65th rank of the official hit list. The NME Awards the band was awarded the 2010 prize for the best music video for "The Captain".
