MELOPHOBIA: Fear of Music.
The most difficult challenge faced Cage The Elephant During the recording of their third album MELOPHOBIA had to face, was to unite the different ideas and approaches of the five band members into a cohesive whole. After they had previously been around for five years constantly on tour to present their first two albums Cage The Elephant (2008) and Thank You, Happy Birthday (2011) live, it took only a little time out to each fOr at new song ideas to work. In August 2012 she finally began to work together MELOPHOBIA...
"Each of us had developed a rough idea of how this third album should sound," says Matt Shultz, the singer of the band. "However, these ideas were miles apart, and therefore the real challenge was to positively connect these sometimes contradictory ideas together. We eventually started to write a few more quiet, almost intimate sounding songs, but then we were quite fast clear that they lacked the emphasis and this playful energy that you finally know it from us. Once we had but realized this, the album took almost as if by magic to take shape. so we had only combine these different approaches times between which really partly worlds were. "
The recordings for the new album, which they will present everything from absolutely exuberant anthems to almost deliberately sounding rock songs, lasted a total of about one year. During the last winter was slowly replaced by the spring, found numerous recording sessions in the St. Charles Studios in Nashville instead, where her master producer Jay Joyce sat again behind the controls. Overall, you have to call their approach experimentally as extreme because the maxim was: Actually, you write songs not - to find them rather. Together with Joyce, the band made it so, in the studio the most of the different song ideas, but even that turned partly as not so easy out. So much so that Cage The Elephant At some point, no other music more consumed - and Matt Shultz tried to be inspired solely by its immediate environment, by intensive listening.
"The songs should rather arise as when a child paints a picture of his parents' home and the memories it serves as a single template," says Shultz. "In so doing, the result is something that is based less on actual, physical conditions, but rather on the emotions that are associated with it. From my own experience I know that pride and fear are the greatest enemies when it comes to something . to create new and interesting, we sometimes tend to land at certain sounds or certain approaches because we believe for any reason, it would be what the creative Zeitgeist correspond - forgetting but perfect that any kind of art actually to da is, to express yourself, so they must be completely free of these things. on this album we tried with both the music and the lyrics, even more precisely to meet the transport and what is going on in us. "
The first single "Come A Little Closer" is a massive rock track with subtle blues strike; at the same time it was one of the first songs Ever, the band wrote for this album. He is so far significant for the entire album, because he brings together the emphasis that unfiltered energy and the already mentioned playfulness that we know of them with their new slope to more soulful soundscapes (the latter can be seen as the grandiose lyrics and the central melody the song). In a similar score also suggests "It's Just Forever", the last song they recorded for this album, which Cage The Elephant in this case, even Alison Mosshart (of The Kills) as vocal guest brought into the boat. The haunting vocals of Mosshart ensures that the powerful song really goes immediately under the skin - and very different sounds as e.g. the midtempo highlight "Hypocrite" or the acoustic closing track "Cigarette Daydreams". Overall, it is possible in the band from Kentucky MELOPHOBIA, to back-known elements in a new light and to find the perfect balance between its classic and the new approach. And as for the exuberance that shines through again and again on the album, it is probably also the fact owed that things were so wonderful rolling, as the initial node was only times burst ...
"The more we were we were working on the album and took everything very closely examined, the more queasy case" a, admits Shultz. "And so we had to these fears rooms only once again out of the way. This was partly anything but a walk, but then there was also moments with absolute feelings of happiness. Everything depended ultimately depend on this fear to overcome, that we probably wrong approach the matter seriously. "
MELOPHOBIA is the successor of Thank You, Happy Birthday, which at first landed in 2011 at # 2 of the US Billboard charts and has sold over a quarter million units. "Shake Me Down", the hit single from said album, stayed for six weeks at the top of the US alternative radio charts after already their debut single "Is not No Rest For The Wicked" (from the eponymous debut album), the top 5 said airplay charts had stormed. The Cage The Elephant album has sold since 2009 over 550,000 times and was 73 weeks represented at a stretch in the Billboard Top 200th At the same time the band was virtually nonstop on tour: In addition to the sold-out headlining tours have occurred, among other things with the Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, Stone Temple Pilots and Silversun Pickups on.
Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, native band is now known to raise the bar with every release and every tour a little higher. For this reason the title refers MELOPHOBIA may not fully exploit rather than to a general fear of the music, but rather on the fear of the potential of their own music.
"One wishes but that you will mature as a person and increases his experience, and that the things you learn on the go then transferring on his own work," Shultz concludes. "And sometimes you have to therefore rouse itself, intentionally leaving the familiar terrain in order not to end up in a position where you just repeated. For that is our greatest fear."
