When name Diana Krall a lot of images come to mind: as the the cool singer whose voice can one covering your ears with sparkling frost, or the elegant swinging pianist or perhaps the seductive blonde on the cover of their last album "Glad Rag Doll ". The image of a wallflower but not sure. Neither in musical nor any other respect. And that it is anything but a wallflower, she proves now once more on their brand new album entitled "Wallflower", shines on the upstart jazz pianist as a pop singer. With a repertoire that have so expected hardly anyone expected, and two very special duet partners from their native Canada: Michael Bublé and Bryan Adams.
Krall, born in 1964, here interpreted mainly songs from their own youth: "California Dreaming" by The Mamas & the Papas, "Desperado" by The Eagles, Elton John's "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", "I'm Not In Love "by 10cc and of course the coming of Bob Dylan title track. But she also dares to recent numbers, such as "Do not Dream It's Over" by Crowded House or a new composition of Paul McCartney, fOr the Krall has worked as a musical director and arranger.
The impetus for this unusual album was Diana Krall the producer and keyboardist David Foster. "Without David would use this album never came about," says Diana Krall. "He always said, 'Let's work together.' But it always came somewhere in between. Now the timing has finally voted. I was willing to work with David and let him do what he does best. He made all the arrangements and played a lot of piano part a. I was speechless. I always knew that he is good, but now I appreciate his talents as a producer and musician much more. "
The respect is mutual. "Working with Diana was fantastic," says Foster. "I had always wondered how a collaboration with her would be. But I never thought it would work, because I live in the 'world of pop' and Diana in the 'Jazz World' - so it can see at least most people. Although I know them now for 25 years, I did not know what a truly exceptional pop singer she is. That they understood it so effortless to switch to Poplager, I was surprised absolutely. I am sure that Diana secretly already knew everything about pop. They tend to be all of us always one step ahead. "
Loved is Foster mainly from the songs in which Krall - solo piano music played - on his explicit request. "With songs like 'California Dreaming' or 'I Can not Tell You Why' plays Diana wonderful, simple, solid, picturesque Piano solos full of melody. They are almost sing. "
"I followed David instructions and just leaned on me, when it was needed. We had our normal disagreements, but at the end everything went smoothly. Especially after I had put him a few times before the door, "said Krall recalls the collaboration. "I grew up with many of the songs of 'Wallflower', she then heard on the radio or on vinyl," adds Diana Krall continued. "These songs I sing for ages to myself. I just needed copies of the texts to play it safe, I also sang the right words. 'I'm Not In Love' by 10cc I had as a single. Bryan Adams I constantly heard. My parents and I loved Linda Ronstadt. You inspired me 'Desperado' singing. I had even hang a poster of Peter Frampton in my room. I was a normal teenager who depended with his friends. I heard not only jazz. The greatest musical influence Ucs next Oscar Peterson Elton John on me. "
Paul McCartney's wonderful (and for the first time recorded) composition "If I Take You Home Tonight" she learned in 2012 know, when they worked with the former Beatle on its album "kisses on the bottom". "this experience had an indelible impact on my life and my music," says Krall. "When I asked Paul if I could record the song because I loved him so, he said at once: 'Of course!"
"Wallflower" is again a relatively unknown Bob Dylan piece from 1971. And has long been one of Krall's favorite songs. "I love Bob Dylan like crazy," admits Krall. "I met him only a few times in person. And on one occasion I told him that I love his piano playing. He said dryly: 'Well, you yourself pianist. So I'll take that as a compliment. 'Dylans music has so much depth.
When I saw the demo version of 'Wallflower' first heard, I fell into the piece. In the background one could hear as a dog barking. I play and sing 'Wallflower' Now half years when I perform with my band. And now I can finally take up the number. "
The piece, in which the young Californian singer / songwriter Blake Mills plays guitar, fOr Diana Krall is something like the heart of the album. "This is a song to which I have a special bond," she concludes. "I'm something of a musical 'method actor', and 'Wallflower' is a 'role' that I always wanted to really play."
