Martha Argerich was born in 1941 in Argentina, her first Public concert was at the age of five years. In 1955 she moved with her family to Europe. There she studied with Friedrich Gulda, Nikita Magaloff and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. At age 16, she won the "Geneva International Music Competition" and the Busoni Competition. In 1964 she undertook a tour of Western Europe and Poland and was in November of the same year her debut in London. At 24, she won the Seventh International Chopin Competition in Warsaw and the Polish Radio Award for her interpretation of Chopin Waltzes and Mazurkas. 2005 Martha Argerich was honored with the highly doped Japanese "Praemium Imperiale".
Since the beginning of her career she has worked regularly with the conductor (and former spouse) Charles Dutoit. One result of this collaboration is published by EMI Classics in 1999 recording the piano concertos No.1 2 of Chopin. this recording was 1998, now with a "Grammy" excellent spectacular recording of piano concertos No.1 3 preceded by Prokofiev and the Piano Concerto No.3 by Bartók that arose after acclaimed concerts in Canada and New York with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit.
Highlights of previously released by EMI Classics Live recordings of concerts Martha Argerich's the recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Mozart's Piano Concerto No.25 of 1978 and 1992 respectively from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (by the press with superlatives considered) and the title a piano recital of Amsterdam (1978-79) with Schumann's "Fantasy pieces" and Ravel's "Sonatine" and "Gaspard de la nuit" (prize of the German record critics 2001). In addition to the Chopin piano concertos published in 1999 and their previously unreleased legendary Chopin recordings of 1965. From the numerous chamber music recordings Martha Argerich's fOr EMI Classics stands out of Beethoven's "Kreutzer" sonata "and Franck's A major Sonata with Itzhak Perlman which was awarded a "ECHO Klassik 2000".
Martha Argerich is at renowned festivals in Europe and overseas frequent guest: so the International Piano Festival Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in Brescia, the Festival of Verbier (Switzerland) and the North American Saratoga Festival.
The artist promotes through its own festivals and even the international junior. In autumn 2001, was the Second International Piano Competition "Martha Argerich" held in La Plata, Argentina / Buenos Aires; Japanese Bepo pianist started her own "Martha Argerich Piano Festival". When in Switzerland held "Martha Argerich Festival Lugano" makes Martha Argerich together with good friends and young musicians Chamber music and presents it before young artists with world class potential. Since 2002 EMI Classics Released every year live recordings with concert highlights from Lugano.
