Born on December 5, 1960 Osvaldo Golijov grew up in a family of Eastern European Jews in Argentine La Plata; his mother was a piano teacher, his father a doctor. Musically Golijov's childhood and youth by classical chamber music, Jewish liturgical and klezmer music, and the new tango of Astor Piazzolla was coined. After studying piano at the local conservatory and composition with Gerardo Gandini, he went to Israel in 1983. There he studied with Mark Kopytman at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem and immersed himself in the opposing musical traditions of this city. he left in 1986 to settle in the US. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with George Crumb, and was a pupil of Oliver Knussen fellow at Tanglewood.
In the early 1990s began Golijov closely with two string quartets together: the St Lawrence String Quartet and the Kronos Quartet. It was the first ensemble who brought Golijov convoluted, hardly classify music in its true, complete shape to be heard, and today they perform his music regularly. Published in 2002, EMI Yiddishbbuk, one for the grammy nominated CD with Golijov's chamber music; The occasion was the 10th anniversary of cooperation between the composer and the St Lawrence String Quartet. The Kronos Quartet brought three pictures of projects with Golijov out: The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind with David Krakauer and Caravan and Nuevo. The Kronos Quartet also expanded Golijov's musical family through collaborations with artists such as the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks, the Mexican rock group Café Tacuba, the tbl # 257; -Virtuosen Zakir Hussain and the legendary Argentine composer, guitarist and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, with the Golijov continues to carry out various projects. In 2000, the premiere of Golijov conquered Markus Passion (La Pasión según San Marcos) The musical world by storm. The work was commissioned by Helmuth Rilling for the European Music Festival in order, which took place on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the death of JS Bach; under the overall direction of Maria Guinand made music the Schola Cantorum of Caracas and the Orquesta La Pasión (which had been put together especially for this work by Golijov and drummer Mikael Ringquist). The Hänssler released on CD recording of the first performance in 2002 for the grammy and the Latin Grammy nominated. For the premiere of Ayre Golijov founded another virtuoso ensemble: "The Andalucian Dogs." Together with Dawn Upshaw led them to the work at Zankel Hall and played it once and for German Grammophon. The recording was released to critical acclaim in January 2006 with a Gramophone Award (2006) and a grammy (2007) excellent.
Golijov has received numerous commissions from renowned ensembles and institutions in the US and Europe. Among his many awards includes a MacArthur Fellowship. Besides the musicians mentioned above he is still working with many other artists, cooperate closely with Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; with conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, the singer Luciana Souza, the cellist Maya Beiser, Yo-Yo Ma and Matt Haimowitz and drummer Jamey Haddad; with young, versatile musicians like Michael Ward-Bergeman, Gonzalo Grau, Ljova and Jeremy Flower; Ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and eighth blackbird; the visual artist Gronk, playwright David H. Hwang and director Peter Sellars, who brought in 2005 at the Santa Fe Opera Ainadamar in a sold-out, critically acclaimed series of performances on stage.
Golijov was composer-in-residence at the Spoleto Festival (USA), the Music Alive series of Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Festival of Marlboro and Ravinia, just to name a few. In November 2005 he was appointed along with Marc-Anthony Turnage for composer-in-residence of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08. The Silk Road Project and Dawn Upshaw, he is working in two educational workshops at Carnegie Hall. Golijov is associate professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he has taught since 1991, and also belongs to the faculty of the Boston Conservatory.
In January and February 2006, the Lincoln Center hosted a festival entitled "The Passion of Osvaldo Golijov" with repeated performances of his major works, chamber music, tango and klezmer nights and one night at the Film Society. In early 2006, also the Barbican two evenings with his music, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra led throughout the season works by him. In August 2006 came the cello concerto premiered Azul, played by his dedication carriers Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
In september 2006, the Low Ainadamar with Dawn Upshaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus was published under the direction of Robert Spano. In April 2007 Rose of the Winds, a work commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, premiered by the orchestra together with the Silk Road Ensemble conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Osvaldo Golijov was the summer of 2007, the first composer-in-residence of the New York Festivals "Mostly Mozart". In july 2007, published by German Grammophon recordings of Oceana, Tenebrae and Three Songs. Golijov's "Muse" Dawn Upshaw was for their "great power" (Los Angeles Times) praised.
