RenÉ Pape was born in 1964 in Dresden, was 1974-81 member of the legendary Kreuzchor his hometown. While still a student, he gave his debut in 1988 at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where he was engaged immediately. Since then he has at this house most of the major roles of his already illustrious career sung, often under the direction of music director Daniel Barenboim. Pape is also in demand as a concert singer and appeared with leading international orchestras and conductors. His recordings have already been awarded two Grammys.
First appearances at the Salzburg Easter Festival. Invited by Solti he sings Sarastro in The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival (1991); also under Solti he is in the same role his debut at La Scala in Milan (1991). Debut as King Philip in Verdi's Don Carlo in Basel and the Metropolitan Opera as Don Fernando at the EXPO 1992 in Seville. Haydn's The Seasons with the Orchestre de Paris and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, each under Solti (1992); first guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera as Don Fernando, Speaker and Sarastro (1992/93 season).
