Of probably dream about teens: Just sit still in the living room of the parents and write songs and in the next moment Pharrell Willams' "Happy" initiated by the chart throne. Sheppard's international hit single "Geronimo" was the battle cry of the band from Brisbane, an incredibly refined Stadionpophymne that reflects the mix of emotions, experience the young people. Now can the six-member, multi-platinum indie band with siblings George, Amy and Emma Sheppard their first album Bombs Away the world going. Until then, it was a fast and crazy way.
The story of Sheppard begins 4000 km from Brisbane in the tropical Pacific Paradise Papua New Guinea, where the family went. The father is a lawyer and in-house music was constantly hear: the morning of Father Cat Stevens turned on in order to awaken all, and the mother sent to piano lessons and music theory lessons. But the biggest influence was her music teacher at school in Port Moresby, Baruka tau Matagu, the keyboardist of the legendary Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi, who has also played with Janet Jackson and Madonna. In the Tau Sheppard discovered her love for harmonies, their fascination with the musician's life - and their work ethic. "He has everything worked out even," says George. "He has had an incredible amount of success, but he is a very humble person."
However Baruka earned the band with not only harmonies, through him they learned the Australian music legend Michael Chugg know, who later became her manager was.
This was not, however, immediately excited -in the moment met the band not quite Chuggs taste. After six months but not easy leaving, he invited her to audition - in front of his entire, 40-strong team. The performance must have been convincing, because afterwards Chugg took them immediately under his wing and they were one of the first acts that stood by his label.
The unusual childhood of the band in Papua New Guinea has left its mark on the music - a sundrenched island atmosphere that strikes a knack for pop melodies, backed by a three times as old songwriting team would surmise. Like many other bands also emerged Sheppard from a random, back in Australia, as Amy, the middle sibling, fOr their musical statements cramming. She felt that one of their songs (working title "Cheese on Toast") was still missing something. Her brother George, who was studying at the time in Sydney spectacle, helped her with the harmonies, and the two discovered that they could write together. They brought the young composer and producer Jay Bovino on board, who just came from the band Vienna Circus from Sydney and after only two months, the trio Bovino, Sheppard and Sheppard had written 30 songs. The musician Michael Butler and Dean Gordon from Brisbane came to guitar and drums to and little sister Emma took over the bass guitar. Having tried it with several producers, they finally met with Stuart Stuart Analog Heart Records a, for which they did not have to bend.
"If, Geronimo '," says Amy, "knew We actually, that will be a hit. We wrote the song in about two hours, we had so many hooks that we do not even have all used. "" Songwriting is like a puzzle, "added, adds George. "It's how to solve problems."
After five minutes with Sheppard's clear that the band has a creative vision that makes you forget their age and lack of experience. "Currently there are not many pure pop acts in the world who write their own songs and sing about their lives," says George. "In most cases, behind a hit, a team of six or seven songwriters. Sheppard is a band for people who like pop music classic Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens and the Beatles like. "
The wealth of melodies Bombs Away reminds in fact at the Lush compositions classical chart pop hits from the 70s and 80s. Polycyclic acoustic guitars and bass drums drive the songs by surprising modulations and styles - in addition to some Southern Gothic ( "Halfway To Hell"), there are also cooler Skandi-Pop ( "This Electric Feeling") and in introspective love songs ( "Something's Missing"). The combination of euphoric melodies and emotional content ensures an overwhelming inspiring sound. "This is music fOr Underdogs", write some critics, and the band agrees: "Sheppard Letter songs and about the discouraged," says Jay. "But there is always hope."
When you see a crowd in Camden, which sings the text saucy separation songs "Let Me Down Easy" loudly, steals a feel that Sheppard know exactly what they are doing: It may be perfect pop music, but her indie roots give them authenticity and Credibility. By his own testimony, the band can fortunate to have started in Brisbane, because with his great, solidary scene it was "the best Australian city to create a band without a record deal breakthrough".
Now that they have attracted the attention of the British agent Steve Strange (Eminem, Coldplay) and the legendary American talent manager Scooter Braun (Usher, Justin Bieber, Psy), them is open to the world. The band is the rest of the year on tour. During the breaks between the shows they are already busy with the recordings for their next album - back of the bus they sing to their iPhones.
