The Secret Sisters

The Secret Sisters

Your band name is well chosen, because there they fanned something mysterious. The Secret Sisters are audible authentic in their exact replica of the tight vocal harmonies of vocal ensembles of the 1950s, the sound of the Everly Brothers and Andrews Sisters. Your music is created on analog vintage equipment. Using old microphones, even the tape is recorded on the dates from that era. Most importantly, both can sing as did the Everly Brothers and the Andrews Sisters. Their harmonies agree molecular successive exactly. No genre leap within her repertoire acts bumpy. Folk, blues, country, gospel, rockabilly master it completely.

Even the cover artwork of their new album "Put Your Needle Down" situating initially in the early 1950s. Time seems fOr Laura and Lydia Rogers from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to play a role. After her debut, the sisters gave four years before they went into the studio for the album's successor - together with their mentors T-Bone Burnett.

Burnett is in the US music scene known as vintage guru, purist, perfectionist and guardians. A man who never a radio mix customize dignity, or write a hook, let alone touch an auto-tune device. Electricity produced by him soundtrack to the Coen brothers cult film O Brother Where Art Thou initiated 14 years ago, a renaissance of American Folks and Countrys of '30er and '40er-years. Then Burnett produced the epochal Raising Sand album by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and several younger albums by Elvis Costello.

The history of Secret Sisters has something fabulous: Two naive, gifted singers from the country go to Nashville to audition at the Hotel Indigo. There is a new girl group will be collected. They convinced immediately the producer Dave Cobb, who sits on the panel. Cobbs credits are on the albums of Country- (neo-) traditionalists like Waylon Jennings and Jamey Johnson. The project of the Girl-group will be immediately abandoned. Cobb calls his buddy T-Bone, and the avalanche roll. Under the wings of these two notables Laura and Lydia Rogers come directly with the biggest names of the international music scene in contact: Jack White, Elton John, Dave Stewart, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Neko Case ... Your song "Tomorrow Will Be Kinder" runs in the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of the cinema blockbuster "the Hunger Games - deadly Games".

Growing up, they are well protected, amid the American Bible Belt, in an archetypal Southern family in northern Alabama. "We lived in an extended family, have grown our own food, spent the weekend with all our cousins, went to church," describe your childhood. Music was a fundamental part of their lives. Their close-knit harmonies came all by itself. "Singing was not something we practiced," says Lydia. "Many people in the South can sing very well, because they go to church. In our church, there was no organ, so we had to learn several voices to sing a capella easy. this song comes from a different time."

Even though their village is very close to an American music center - from Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones have all sorts of Stars at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio included - so went the past Laura and Lydia. They set no band, but went to high school to college. Music there were still only at home, where only plates ran, who had heard their parents at the same age: Merle Haggard, George Jones, Doc Watson, The Four Seasons.

The idea to go to the casting to Nashville, had Laura, because she so wanted her lifelong fright overcome. "There was in the larger family reunion relatives who told me:` I will give you a hundred dollars, you go forward and a song singst', and I have not done it because I was so scared, "she says. The audition in Nashville, where they were discovered, was her first Public auditions.

Named after their album debut of Secret Sisters hit 2010 high waves and set standards. Their interpretations of songs by Hank Williams or Buck Owens were so "perfectly retro as Mad Men," NPR wrote. On their second album "Put Your Needle Down" the sisters who wrote the majority of songs (co-) and controlled their song topics in new areas. Had the debut still something naive and swarms Generic, so run through "Put Your Needle Down" stories in which love ends in disaster. Circa on the song "Luka", where a disgraceful father murdered his daughter and blown her secret fiance, and a girl defends herself on the PJ Harvey cover "Pocket Knife" against an arranged marriage. For this song, the line comes: "Mummy, put your needle down / How did you feel when you finish were young", from which it borrowed the album title.

Two further highlights of the album are the driving, southern-rock, romantic single "Rattle My Bones", written by her longtime girlfriend Brandi Carlile, and Bob Dylan demo / Bootleg 'Dirty Lie ". Personal he bequeathed it to the sisters to sie's written over and recordings. The enigmatic folk god Bob Dylan, the voice of a generation, whose titles have been covered countless, has presented an unreleased song to a newcomer duo! Well, at least was T-Bone Burnett, between 1975 and '76, the guitarist of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and produced 2010 album Women and Country Jakob Dylan.

The catch: amid the ongoing recordings they had only one night to bring the song in its final form. "The scariest thing," asserts Laura, "which would have been if he had liked our version does not." They rolled up their sleeves, took out the guitars, remained on the night and brought the heavy, swampy, soulful blues tracks, can Peggy Lee would sing to the end. Dylan and T-Bones thumbs went up while listening to the new version - what a knighthood!

In the US, "Put Your Needle Down" was released in April 2014 and reached the top 20 of the country charts, # 3 on the folk charts and # 1 on the Heatseekers charts the industry bible Billboard. Although the production of the album has an aura of the 1950s, yet have many details confident in our time, "... no archival replicas, but glossy Hollywood remakes," judged the New York Times. Their new album doing the exquisite old duo harmonies again to-date, was USA Today. "The Secret Sisters bring the listener into an era back in the singer purity overproduction presented," wrote the Rolling Stone. "This time they give their typical retro sound even more energy."

In today's roots-rock and country scene many see them as figures of light after Country is turned off in the US and chic geworden- towards Southern-rock, pop and RB. A secret is no longer the Secret Sisters. The secrets of the golden age of American music have preserved to this day.
