White Lies - "Ritual" (release date: 28/01/2011)
After the release of their acclaimed debut
they go in front of millions of people around the world, to be precise on the side of one of the most famous men Ever. The experience to be allowed was simply amazing. We felt like little boys running around in the studio and tried out how it feels to sit in his chair. That was probably the biggest 'Superstar moment' in our career so far. "
bass player Charles Cave again had his greatest moment of happiness when he was stuck any motorway in Poland just at the edge: "We had never previously occurred in Poland, and then our tour bus was four hours from a festival away just stand. We finally sat fOr beaten 10 hours stuck there and could not continue. Those in charge of the festival sent sometime a few cars going, with whom we should be picked up, and we just thought: We should occur in the evening at nine o'clock in any tent in a country where we have never played. Is it worth all the effort or should we cancel the simple? Why all the stress? But we came finally reached our goal to, attracted to us, and when we entered the stage in brimful tent, we stood in front of the best and wildest audience we had ever seen. Since must probably have been about 20,000 people in this tent that. Even when we played the first song it was clear that each of them could sing every word. "
"I felt a little sick that night, to be honest," the exceedingly loquacious lyricist of the band will continue to report. "Clean emotionally me no other appearance slain like this gig in Poland - and now counts Poland among the countries in which we are most like. Said appearance shows quite well how much we have plowed and reached outside England. Many bands that you may need as many of our competitors are called, in purely statistical terms in the UK still much more successful than we are. But for that we have earned us an international fanbase: Poland, Russia, Japan, Mexico ... "
"The two performances at the Brixton Academy for me were absolute highlights," says Harry McVeigh, The singer of the three-piece band, which together took in West London of 2006. "A kind of home game, and it just felt just amazing to be in a concert hall, in which we used to always pilgrimage to look any bands. In addition, the production of both shows was simply enormous: We suddenly felt like a true professional band, "he says. "All of a sudden we were a really 'big thing'."
"Big thing" captures it well, in fact: "To Lose My Life" rose in January 2009 immediately ranked # 1 in the UK charts, and should be world sell 750,000 times. White Lies were then not only the "New Band of the Year" at the Q and the Mojo Awards, they landed on the cover of the NME and were chosen by the readers of the Journal at # 2, the reader-year charts late last year. Not a bad year so.
So what happens at the beginning of 2011 the White Lies? Now, the batteries are fully charged again, their faith in their own abilities is strengthened, and they sign up with "Ritual" back, their second album and a true Rock / Electro-round envelope, on which they have processed all the experiences and lessons of the 18-month world tour.
Your self-confidence, their determination, and not least their ambition sprint onto the haunting electronica track "Peace And Quiet", Incidentally, the favorite piece of Lawrence-Brown, not for failure to hear: "The song means a lot to me extremely. That was the last number that was added, so far, the track much of an aural finale. Nevertheless, I would even call the piece to highlight the new LP. But the work in the studio felt in this case, quite different to - somehow carefree and much looser. The track itself therefore feels more organic than any other, even though there at the beginning and at the end of this electronic beat is heard. "
Not unimportant was also the choice of the producer: White Lies brought with Alan Moulder a legend in the boat, which was already fOr timeless recordings of bands like Them Crooked Vultures or My Bloody Valentine behind the controls. Together with Max Dingel, the guys already fOr the recordings of "To Lose My Life" had committed, helped Moulder the band in bringing their ideas in his own Assault And Battery Centre in London in the final form. "Alan was exactly the right man for us, "says Cave. "He is a little older, a little wiser, an absolute genius in technology issues, and he has us ultimately enables exactly to create the sound that we had in mind - only we were never without him able this vision even begin to implement as . "
The perfect interplay of collective vision of the band and know-how of the producer is in a sense the foundation of "Ritual", an album that was written in just five weeks and recorded within six weeks. No Herumgewurschtel, no Rumgemurkse and no frantic search for "a new direction" or "surefire hit". Instead: Just a bunch of friends who started as a teenager and have now matured into a creative trio, which is always focused on task, mutually strengthens the back and not afraid to experiment has.
"Originally we had much bigger plans: We flew to Paris and looked a real slick luxury studio at" recalls Cave. "But at the time we had around filed three weeks to the song ideas, and everything was just too good for a change of location. Two weeks later, we had all the songs already written. Completely new and different compared to its predecessor, this time was that Harry and I have all the material written at home on his computer. While the songs are initially created the last time at the keyboard, we have immediately changed so this time we were able to install them as a band; then we added these versions and thereby added a few more things. "
but that he means only a few minor details, because a large part of the elements that fOr the Demo versions "Ritual" find were, has made it on the final album. Also showing how brave and confident White Lies were when they took their new album in attack. A development way, which is partly due to the fact that their record collections have grown since recording their debut "by a factor of 20," as they also grant itself.
"On tour we Everywhere discovered new influences, various songs and artists who are extremely well-liked," reports McVeigh. "And as we had for the first time a bit of money in their pockets, we have invested in the same time a lot of new music. This in turn has greatly influenced our whole approach, after all, we have all these sounds absorbed formally in us. "
Your new listening habits - in this case, people like Richie Hawtin and his shots as Plastikman and other Bleep-sizes, the Swedish metal band Opeth, or even the Danish producer Trentemøller - Voice, for example in the techno-felling of "The Power The Glory ". "With the beat and this glitch elements we refer to exactly these people," said Cave.
The first single of Oversized and ultra punchy track appears "Bigger Than Us". The title says it all ...
"The song has a pretty massive chorus," says McVeigh and grins up over both ears. "A perfect song for the radio is. I realize that now sounds as if we would make us a head over the hit potential of individual tracks, but what it should please even be wrong ?! We are now times an ambitious band. We want to have the best songs on our album. "
"Comedown", with the plate fades, so is still a highlight: The rich voice of McVeigh slides over a minimum Electronica carpet, the cold and surprisingly hot at the same time sounds until suddenly ... opens a completely different soundscape: "Originally, we wanted to make a song that sounds a little like Tears For Fears, but much, much minimalist "says a smiling Cave. "Ten minutes later, this idea was already back from the table. The middle part sounded namely full after Gospel and RB, and so we sat there, listened to the recording and grinned at us: 'I do not know which is good enough now? Is that cool 'But we are really proud of this part we like the fact that many people will ask:.'? What the HELL the be now, please? ' "
The choice of the album title, so Cave, go back to the fact that "many of the songs have to do with different rituals, even if they are with all kinds of things that we do people repeatedly not necessarily good for us. A song like 'Holy Ghost' is quite literally to understand, for example: We take a look in a very specific and rather extreme example from the field of religion. 'Strangers' however, deals with the rituals associated with a purely sexual and otherwise completely passionless relationship. "
"The album as a whole, therefore, acts as a sort of large clip, united in all these aspects and on a few key issues are boiled down: What it does is to simply just killing time, and what helps one in search of the meaning of life? Has one who gets up every morning and only once for three hours praying a completely different self-image of himself as someone who rises every night with another to bed or permanently is the edge? "
McVeighs comment: "I like the title because he and nothing can mean anything yet. One can relate it to religion or love, things that play a central role in life. Or it may simply involve going, how to get every evening from work to home and then sitting in front of the telly - and which can be as a ritual. "
Regarding their upcoming shows: Last time are White Lies Also known as the four-piece band. Now they have dazugeholt another fellow and will present their new songs to Fifth: "More space, more pressure, more backing," says Jack Brown.
"I would say that the whole approach has changed since our first LP. In our debut we have done everything possible on thick and possible to sound bombastic, even if we then not wanted to admit, "says Charles Cave with an openness and honesty that is absolutely characteristic of this band. "Pretty pathetic it was. We were determined to Strings! Everything had as great sound as possible! I know that 'big' a difficult term, the other bands too often use. But that's what we wanted now time - and perhaps we are so even a little over overshot the target. "
"We were, after all, also criticized: They said to us, we would partially somewhat sterile or sound contrived. But this problem we have now been fixed. For example, were it the texts: On our debut negotiated nor exception of fictional subjects, even if they already then based on real events and fates. But merely because it was pretty hard to convey real emotions in the songs. This time, however, we have really given everything and have also gone completely unconventional ways for it. In the other direction namely: We wanted to see how many cracks and blemishes can withstand the final version, because some of the shots are anything but 'perfect'. Harrys vocal cords had in the last two years, for example, quite a lot of join, and after 18 months on the road with all the butts and drinks it does not sound long as the young and clear angelic voice of yesteryear. But that's what I find again perfect it. "
Power, fame, peace, tranquility, sex, religion, error, passion, fractures, flaws, heart, soul - to all these things on "Ritual". Sometimes even to even more. And sometimes earlier one tick.
